Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the mission of St. John’s is to raise up, nurture, and encourage disciples to glorify God through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, His Son. When you respond to the gospel and surrender your life to Jesus, everything changes. Worship is at the heart of St. John’s. We believe worship to be an enjoyable experience. But more than that, we were created to worship and that we are at our best when we worship. However, different churches have different ways of worshiping God. We hold two services on Sunday and each offers a unique worship experience. **We believe there is one God**, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit *(Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19).* **We believe in God the Father Almighty**, maker of heaven and earth, author of all beauty, truth, and goodness *(John 1:1-3).* **We believe Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.** No one comes to God the Father but through Him *(John 14:6).* **We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son who suffered and died on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for sins**, giving forgiveness and eternal life to all those who put their faith and trust in Him *(Romans 5:8, Romans 10:9-10).* **We believe God raised Jesus from the dead** and that His death and resurrection are the central events of history *(Acts 26:23, 1 Peter 1:3).* **We believe in the third person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit**, who baptizes, fills, instructs, counsels, comforts, convicts, purifies, exhorts, and strengthens all believers in accordance with God’s good will and purpose *(Acts 5:3-4, I Corinthians 3:16, Romans 8:14).* **We believe that for salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential** *(Acts 2:38)*. **We believe the Bible,** consisting of the Old and New Testaments, to be the only inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritative Word of God *(2 Timothy 3:16-17).* **We believe in the sanctity of life.** All human life is created by and from the hands of God and is therefore precious *(Psalm 139:13-16)*. From the moment of conception, God forms and fashions us into unique creations, and He controls our destinies. As image bearers of God, Man and Woman have inherent worth *(Genesis 1:27).* Mankind’s worth is further demonstrated by the incarnation of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death and resurrection so that we may receive forgiveness for our sins and be reconciled to Him *(John 3:16).* Our bodies are described as a temple for the Holy Spirit that are to be presented as a holy and living sacrifice *(Romans 12:1)*. We are called to honor children as a blessing *(Psalms 127:3-5)*, honor each other in relationships *(Romans 12:1*0), and hold all life as sacred. *(Luke 12:6-7, Ephesians 2:10).* **We believe in the sanctity of marriage**. We believe that God’s Word guides and directs our understanding regarding the definition of what marriage is and who marriage is to be between: one man and one woman *(Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-5).* **We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ**, His only son, who existed as God before anything was created *(John 1:1)*, His virgin birth *(Matthew 1:23)*, sinless life *(Hebrews 4:15)*, miracles, death on the cross to provide for our redemption *(1 Peter 2:24)*, bodily resurrection and ascension into heaven *(1 Corinthians 15:3-8)*, present ministry of intercession for us *(Hebrews 7:24-25)* and His return to earth in power and glory *(Matthew 24:30)*. He is the world’s only Savior and is the Lord of all *(John 14:6, Acts 4:12, Isaiah 45:21-23).* When something positive happens, your first response is to tell others. You declare your faith in Jesus by telling the story of your salvation. Most people begin by sharing their decision to follow Jesus with their family, friends, pastor, or minister. You can contact the church office at**  **office****@stjohnsss.org****.** I have been the Senior Pastor at St John’s since February 2022.  I was previously the senior pastor at St Peter’s Reformed in Zelienople for 18 years.  Before that I was associate pastor at St John’s, serving as the Director of Youth and Children’s Ministries and Christian Education for 10 years. Having been a member of St. John’s for over 40 years, I am extremely well-rooted. There is no more rewarding job than to serve the Lord by pouring my love and care into His people. I am honored to assist Pastor Jim in overseeing the spiritual needs of the church.. I am a very happy pastor’s wife, mother of two beautiful daughters, adopted mom to a terrific son, and a blessed Me-Maw to four wonderful grandbabies! God is good! As happy as I am when I am around my family, I am very happy to help serve St. John’s with our Children’s Ministry and Christian Education. I have always loved working with children of all ages. I am a people-person and enjoy making everyone around me happy. I am pleased to serve as St. John's Administrative Assistant. Before joining the team, I spent nine years as an event coordinator, so color-coded calendars and organized chaos are kind of my specialty. I graduated from Missouri Baptist University with a degree in Sports Management and Business Administration and moved to Berks County in 2021 with my husband, Matt. I’m grateful to be part of such a welcoming community and enjoy interacting with our church family. I am passionate about using music to glorify God and helping others to do the same. I have the joy and privilege of doing that as both the Director of Contemporary Worship (since 2013) and Bell Choir Director (since 2011) here at St. Johns. My husband and I have 2 sons, 2 daughter-in-laws and 2 grandchildren and we are so blessed to be able to share our love for the Lord (and all things creative) with all of them! I started picking out tunes on the piano at age 3. I accompanied singers by age 8 and played full church organ for a wedding at age 9. I have been writing songs since the age of 8. I have B.S. in Music Ed. from West Chester University, and a Master’s from University of The Arts. I started as the church organist/choir director at St John’s and left in 1982. Since then I have been organist and/or choir director at several churches in Berks and Lancaster County, before returning back home to St John’s in March 2023. I am thrilled to be able to work at St John’s and expand its music presence! I have been a lifelong member of St John’s. I was baptized, confirmed, and married at St John’s. I have been a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years and have directed the Children’s Choirs since 2003. Teaching children is one of my passions. They bring such joy to our lives. S**unday School:** At 9:00 a.m., we have Sunday School classes for all ages, divided by appropriate learning age groups with children learning Bible stories and building the foundation of their faith. - **Nursery Care:** We offer a well-equipped and secure nursery for infants and toddlers. - **Children's Choirs:** Children age 4 and up have the opportunity to worship through music and typically perform for the congregation once a month during the traditional service. - Considering that the early church worshipped in large settings in the synagogues as well as in homes, we unite together similarly in order to be in deeper fellowship with God and one-another. God has reconciled us not only to Himself but also to each other. This "each other" is called His Church. Thus, we intentionally strive toward community through men's/women's groups, home gatherings, and other personal settings. We have been created to live in community and not in isolation. Physically, we do live in a community, but spiritually, socially, and relationally we often live our lives in isolation. We find ourselves with no one to turn to when we have a major issue that has just surfaced in our life. Living in community affords us the opportunity to more wholly experience God through close relationships as we play and pray together, as we encourage and help one another, and as we study and live out God’s word together. We believe the church is the family of God called to live on mission to advance His Kingdom. Because we are God's children through Jesus, we are to live as brothers and sisters. The church is not a building, place, or program, but God's people. Living in community with one another is essential to growing in the Gospel and becoming more like Christ. Showing up to a Sunday gathering is great, but it is our desire to see everyone involved in a Missional Community. A Missional Community is not a mid-week program, but a family of missionary servants who are making disciple-making disciples daily. We would love to see all of our Missional Communities hanging out throughout the week, eating meals together and serving their neighborhoods. Both are held in our main Sanctuary, with parking available in the main lot behind the church, the small lot on the west side of the building, an upper lot at the cemetery, and the lot at the corner of Penn Ave. and S. Hull St. Our 10:30 a.m. service incorporates traditional styles of music. Both the pipe organ and grand piano are used to play hymns. Traditional responses and prayers are also spoken aloud or sung. Children are invited to attend Junior Church. A clean and safe nursery is provided for children two years and younger. Additionally, we [livestream](https://www.youtube.com/user/sjrcss) this service. The first of our Sunday services is contemporary and less formal. Worshipers are not expected to know memorized prayers or liturgy since the goal of this service style is to make everyone feel as comfortable and included as possible, even if they lack experience in church. The same sermon is offered during this service, but it is delivered in a less formal style. If you are unable to worship in person, both services are livestreamed each week. Here are some of the typical questions we get from first-time visitors: **When Should I Arrive?** We suggest you arrive about 15 minutes before the service. You can come earlier and enjoy a cup of coffee in our Coffee House, just steps from the Sanctuary. **What Should I Wear?** You’ll find a wide variety of dress at St. John’s. Some prefer to wear a suit and tie or a skirt and blouse, while others are more comfortable dressing casually, wearing jeans and a polo shirt. So feel free to come dressy or casual. You won’t have to change your wardrobe to worship here. **What about Children?** We know that as a parent you need be sure that your children are in a safe learning environment. And we know that your children are looking for a fun place to learn. We’ve invested a lot to make sure that both of these goals are met. We encourage children to attend Sunday School (classes designed for all age groups) starting at 9:00 a.m., and we also offer Jr. Church during the 10:30 a.m. service that follows the children’s sermon. **What Types of Music Do You Offer?** Our 10:30 a.m. traditional service includes classic and inspirational hymns and features our senior and kids’ choirs and the bell choir on various Sundays. If you prefer contemporary worship, you can join our 9:00 a.m. service led by our praise team. **What Are the Sermons Like?** We believe that the Bible is both exciting and relevant for our lives today, so that’s how the message is taught. Our pastor’s message is easy-to-understand and practical for dealing with real life. The goal is for you to come away with something that you can personally apply, a way for you to grow closer to the God who knows and loves you. **Do You Offer Communion?** We do offer Communion as a way to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is something Jesus told his followers to do so that we do not forget his sacrifice for us. The original name of the church was St. John’s Evangelical Presbyterian Reformed Church. The original building, which is still standing and part of the present structure, was 48 feet wide and 56 feet long. The cornerstone was laid on Ascension Day, May 3, 1794. In 1898, a charter was granted, and the name of the church was changed to St. John’s Reformed Church. In 1957, the union of the Congregational Christian Church and the Evangelical and Reformed Church established the United Church of Christ, and the name of the church became St. John’s United Church of Christ. In 2002, St. John’s left the United Church of Christ and became an independent church, reverting to the charter name of St. John’s Reformed Church. In 2023, we established our affiliation with the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference. There have been several additions to the church since the original construction, including a complete renovation in 1924. On September 29, 1926, a severe storm swept through the Sinking Spring area and toppled the 151-foot steeple into the sanctuary, destroying that portion of the building. The church was rebuilt after the storm damage. Another large addition was built in 1961, which included Sunday School rooms and a large fellowship hall on the lower level. Renovations were completed in 2003 that added a new street entrance, elevator, and central air conditioning. In over 230 years of existence, St. John’s has only had ten senior pastors: In 2025, we renovated and updated the sanctuary, giving it a fresh look and making better use of space. This involves getting to know others in church by committing to worship regularly and build relationships with other believers. - **The next step is Grow. We’re here to help you grow in your walk with God, in your relationship with others.** This equipping is done through: Bible studies and small groups. We will teach the new believer what the Bible says and how to apply it to their lives. - **The next step is moving the new person to Service.** We believe that ministry is a team sport and not something we simply watch others do. The first meets at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall and another meets at 10:15. The coffee is always hot and the discussions engaging. - **Men's Bible Study:** A men's Bible study is held the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month starting at 8:30 a.m. - **After-"Words":** Every Monday morning, we take a deeper dive into the sermon and lessons from the previous Sunday. By serving communities and individuals in need, we also serve Christ. Outreach funds are allocated to support various groups, including missionaries, Christian charities, natural disaster relief, and local needs. **Family Promise** is a national organization that carefully screens temporarily homeless families. They work with local churches to provide food and shelter for the qualifying families. The program also manages transportation, counseling, parenting classes, budgeting classes, and job searches. We "host" families 3-4 times a year for a week at a time, providing meals and gift cards for household needs. Family Promise has a 100% apartment placement rate for those families who complete the program successfully. **Hope Rescue Mission:** For 130 years, Hope Rescue Mission has been a place of refuge for people experiencing homelessness in Berks County. The organization provide meals, shelter, and support services for those in need in our community 365 days a year. Each month, volunteers from St. John's helps serve dinner at Hope Rescue Mission. A **GriefShare support group** is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. Through this 13-week group, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. The pastors at St. John's lead the support group, with the 13-week sessions offered in the spring and fall. Through donations from the congregation, we provide food boxes to local families in need at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, so they can enjoy a meal that otherwise might be impossible. At St. John's, we collect non-perishable food items throughout the month for donation to the Wilson Area Food Pantry. The food pantry distributes food the third Friday of each month from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.. Volunteers are needed each month to help with distribution and also on the day prior to help set up. Each fall, St. John's shares the message and power of the Gospel through the Operation Christmas Child program, filling shoe boxes for worldwide distribution. A team of volunteers also travels to Baltimore to help with processing boxes. Several times a year, volunteers from St. John's Reformed Church prepare and serve lunch at Opportunity House, an emergency shelter located in Reading, PA that has been serving the homeless population since 1984. Grief over losing a pet can often be minimized or even overlooked, yet it is real. Our Pet Loss Support Group, led by Dr. Becky Frank (associate veterinarian with Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice and certified in Thanatology \[death, loss, grief, and bereavement\]), meets monthly and is open to the public. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room. - **Praise Team:** Our Just Worship praise team performs during the 9:00 a.m. contemporary service and rehearses Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary - **Bell Choir:** Our bell choir generally performs the 4th Sunday of each month during the 10:30 service. This Fourth of July, Americans will celebrate 250 years of independence. How exciting! Many of us remember the song *Ring of Fire*, made famous by Johnny Cash in the 1960s. The title reminds me of a story that made a lasting impression on me -- perhaps it will do the same for you. Unfortunately, statistics show that Father’s Day is not celebrated as passionately as Mother’s Day, which tends to involve more spending on gifts, cards, and dining out. Yet a father is so instrumental in modeling our Heavenly Father to his children. I have always loved this story from the Gospel of John, mainly because I have felt a strong connection to the adulteress who was about to be stoned by a group of religious leaders. Ahh – the joy of summer nights! Once darkness falls, birds settle in their nesting place, crickets begin their symphony, and lightning bugs make their entrance onto nature’s stage. Science has proven that even the healthiest person has enough harmful bacteria in them to kill them within 24 hours except for one thing – the amazing power of the human body to resist bacterial attacks.  Copyright 2025 St. John's Reformed Church. Gathering together throughout the month strengthens the bonds of our church family. This group meets monthly (2nd Wednesday) for an hour or two of food, fellowship, and fun. On Monday mornings, we have the After-"Words" group that enjoys breakfast and then delves into a deeper study of the previous Sunday's message. Held the third Saturday of each month, typically in the Fellowship Hall. A time of food, fellowship, and a devotion. Usually held at a nearby restaurant, ladies gather for lunch and fellowship on the second Tuesday each month. This group of those widowed or divorced meets monthly to guide and strengthen each other through various activities. Ladies gather monthly (2nd Saturday) for a time of refreshment, devotionals, and service projects. **Additionally, there is a wide variety of other activities throughout the year when our church family gathers together for fundraisers, special meals, holiday activities, and much more!** Copyright 2025 St. John's Reformed Church. A ramp replaced the step into the sanctuary, increasing accessibility for all. The sound desk was moved to the rear of the sanctuary with much more space. The altar area was expanded, creating a larger stage for choirs, kids, etc. Instead of large monitors, a retractable screen was installed. Hardwood floors were stripped, stained and refinished. Welcome Center was re-arranged to allow more space. Exterior work included brick repointing and cleaning as well as a new roof and the addition to the original building. Work was completed and the congregation was welcomed back into the sanctuary for Resurrection Sunday, April 20, 2025. We dedicated the renovated Sanctuary on May 11, 2025. Because of this, St. John’s Reformed Church sponsors a support group for those grieving the loss of a pet. The program entails six different sessions, and participants may join at any time. The group is open to the public and offered free of charge\*. The sessions (typically held the first Monday of the month, 6:45 p.m.) cover: \*Pls. Losing my soul dog was the deepest pain I’ve ever experienced, and while I know I’ll always miss him, this group helped me learn healthier ways to carry that grief. Dr. Becky’s kindness, the welcoming space she created, the Scripture she shared, the thoughtful discussion questions and the support of others who truly understood reminded me that I wasn’t alone and helped me move forward in my healing journey one step at a time.”* *" After rushing my cat to a pet emergency after cancer started affecting her heart and lungs, the vet who examined her helped me decide it was time, even though I knew that in my heart. All I could do was question if her chances of beating the cancer would have been better if I had noticed symptoms of the cancer's recurrence sooner. Thankfully, I read about Dr. Becky’s support group the week after and went to the meeting. The meetings definitely helped me deal with the grief I had and helped me realize I had done everything I could for Gabby. I know these meeting helped me to heal."* Sessions are led by Dr. Becky Frank, DVM, associate veterinarian with Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice.
